In a heartfelt endeavor to enhance educational opportunities and improve the lives of the rural community's children, the Club of Cap-Haitien in partnership with the Rotaract E-club Haïti Global has embarked on a transformative project titled "Rehabilitation of the School Le Sage of Balan." This ambitious initiative aligns with the Rotary areas of focus, primarily Basic Education and Literacy and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene. It also aims to uplift the lives of not only the students of Le Sage de Balan but also the entire community.
Founded in 2015, Institution Le Sage de Balan is situated in the first communal section of Morne Rouge, within the commune of Plaine du Nord. It's a haven of education for 288 children aged 3 to 12, encompassing kindergarten through 6th grade. Located an hour away from Cap-Haitien, the largest city in the region, this school plays a pivotal role in providing basic education to the children of Balan.
The Club of Cap-Haitien and The Rotaract E-club Haïti Global, with a strong commitment to Rotary's focus areas of Basic Education and Literacy and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, set out to assess how they could make a meaningful impact in this underserved community. The needs they encountered were both pressing and profound.
The school's facilities were far from ideal. The absence of proper toilet facilities posed a significant health and sanitation risk to the children. The dilapidated state of the building, with unpainted walls and structural issues, jeopardized the safety and well-being of the students. It became evident that Institution Le Sage de Balan required a comprehensive renovation to secure a brighter future for its students
The estimated cost of this ambitious endeavor to rebuild the school is $137,000 USD. In a first step towards addressing these pressing concerns, we intend to collect $34,000 USD to construct a sanitary block, a vital component of ensuring the children's health and well-being.
